Background to the Hymn

Elizabeth H. Codner composed the text of this hymn in 1860, inspired by reports of religious revival and blessing being experienced by others, and her own heartfelt prayer that God’s blessing would also fall on her, as expressed in the refrain “Even me, even me”.

In the past few weeks, this hymn has become a recurring song first in my church and then in a conference I attended recently – Let the showers of refreshing pour on me, even me. And so just like Elizabeth, my heart has become stirred to cry to my Father, Oh Lord, we have heard of the exploits which you carried out with our fathers, you refreshed their hearts with showers from on high, Lord, I desire that you will pour out some drops, actually showers on me as well, even me oh Lord!

Lyrics

1. Lord, I hear of showers of blessing
Thou art scattering full and free;
Showers the thirsty land refreshing,
Let some drops now fall on me,

Refrain
Even me, even me,
Let some droppings fall on me.

2. Pass me not, O gracious Father!
Sinful though my heart may be;
Thou might’st leave me, but the rather
Let Thy mercy fall on me.

3. Pass me not, O tender Savior!
Let me love and cling to Thee;
I am longing for Thy favor;
While Thou’rt calling, call for me.

4. Pass me not, O Lord, the Spirit!
Thou canst make the blind to see;
By the Witness of Thy merit,
Speak the word of power to me.

5. Have I been in sin long sleeping,
Long bee sleeping, grieving Thee?
Has the world my heart been keeping?
Oh forgive and rescue me

6. Love of God, so pure and changeless!
Blood of Christ, so rich and free!
Grace of God, so strong and boundless!
Magnify them all in me.

7. Pass me not! Thy lost one bringing,
Bind my heart, O Lord, to Thee;
While the streams of life are springing,
Blessing others, oh, bless me.
